Dehumidifiers remove excess moisture from the air to regulate the humidity in a room. This process ensures that mold, dust mites, and other organisms are not able to develop. But, how does a dehumidifier actually work?
Illustrated below is a simplified diagram of a dehumidifier.

1. To remove moisture from the air, a mechanically driven fan draws the humid air into the dehumidifier.
2. The air is forced over cold coils, where it is made to reach the dew point. This causes the moisture in the humid air to condensate on the coils.
3. As the humid air releases its moisture through condensation, the moisture drips into the water tank beneath the coils.
4. The air is then reheated as it leaves the dehumidifier, and warm, dry air blows out of the unit.
